Motherwell is inducted into the National Institute of Arts and Letters.

Motherwell meets with Frank Lloyd of the Marlborough-Gerson Gallery to terminate his contract but learns that it is too late; on March 7, while he was in London, an automatic two-year renewal of the contact had taken effect.

Motherwell breaks the lease on his studio at 414 East Seventy-fifth Street in anticipation of a summer in Provincetown and his planned move to Greenwich in the autumn.
