January-April 1969

Motherwell continues preparations for the first exhibition of the new Open series at Marlborough-Gerson Gallery. By the end of April he has completed forty-five large paintings and thirty smaller canvasses (approximately 24 x 36 inches) in the Open series. Motherwell settles on the title for the new series in mid-February when he comes across the eighty-two definitions of the word ''open'' in the Random-House Unabridged Dictionary; the series, which he had informally referred to as the ''Window'' series to this point, is named the ''Open'' series.
