Motherwell moves from East Islip to an apartment at 122 East Eighty-second Street in New York to be closer to Hunter College.

Motherwell's essay ''The Public and the Modern Painter'' is published in the Easter issue of Catholic Art Quarterly.

Motherwell speaks at the ''Symposium on Modern Painting'' at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University. Other speakers include Oliver Larkin, Meyer Schapiro, and Ben Shahn.
