Robert Motherwell, 1935
Spring 1937

Motherwell receives his B.A. from Stanford University. His senior thesis is a study of Eugene O'Neill's use of psychoanalytic theory. In San Francisco he hears AndrŽé Malraux speak in passionate defense of the Republican cause in Spain. On March 29, Motherwell enrolls in a painting class at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco. Urged to choose a career by his father, Motherwell applies to Harvard University and is accepted provisionally, with the understanding that he learn either French or German by the beginning of the autumn semester.
